Bass Review Magazine was born out of a simple frustration: most gear coverage felt like it was written for everyone except real working bassists. Specs were copied from press releases, “reviews” sounded like adverts and the questions that matter on a gig were rarely answered.
So we decided to build something different – a dedicated bass resource that asks: What does this actually sound like in a band mix? Who is this really for? Would we spend our own money on it?
What We Focus On
- Real-world tests at home, in rehearsals and on stage
- Brand overviews that help you understand the whole range
- Honest pros and cons instead of hype
- Guides that start from the player’s perspective, not the marketing copy
What You’ll Find at Bass Review Magazine
Deep-Dive Reviews
We go beyond “sounds great” and “feels nice”. Our reviews look at mix placement, genre suitability, ergonomics, build quality and long-term reliability. If something isn’t right, we say so.
Brand Spotlights
Our brand pages collect everything we know about a builder in one place – heritage, signature models, who the instruments suit and how they compare to alternatives.
Tone & Rig Guides
From classic soul sounds to modern prog tones, we break down how to get there with real-world rigs: bass, amp, pedals and playing approach.
Player-Focused Content
Interviews, lessons, practice ideas and real-world stories from bassists who are out there gigging, recording, teaching and touring.

How Our Reviews Work
Real Use, Not Just First Impressions
Wherever possible, we use instruments and gear in real-world situations – rehearsals, sessions and gigs. Tone and feel can change a lot once you’re playing with a drummer and another loud musician in the room.
Context Over Hype
We always try to answer: Who is this for? A bass that’s perfect for a modern metal player might be totally wrong for a Motown-influenced bassist – and that’s okay.
Clear Language
No unnecessary jargon. When we use technical terms, we explain what they mean in plain bass-player language.
Honest Pros & Cons
Every piece of gear has trade-offs. We highlight them so you can decide whether something is right for your playing, budget and gigs.
Who’s Behind Bass Review Magazine?
Bass Review Magazine is run by bass players, educators and working musicians who have spent years on stages, in studios and in rehearsal rooms. We care about:
- Helping you spend your money wisely on gear that truly fits your needs
- Demystifying brands, specs and marketing language
